Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Vocational Education and Training (VET) refers to “education and training for work” and forms part of a broader educational network in Australia, which includes schools, universities, and adult and community education providers.

At Woodcrest State College, students have access to a range of nationally accredited qualifications, including Certificate I through to Diploma level. Successful completion of these qualifications provides students with recognised credentials and opens up a variety of career and further education pathways.

Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS)

Students can undertake VET as part of their school studies, either through programs delivered and resourced by the school’s Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or by enrolling in a qualification with an external RTO. External programs may be funded by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training’s VET Investment Budget or through fee-for-service arrangements (i.e. where the student or parent covers the cost).

The WesTEC Trade Training Centre also offers VETiS courses to students. WesTEC is jointly owned by a local cluster of schools including Redbank Plains, Springfield Central, and Forest Lake State High Schools. Woodcrest State College is the lead school and manages the centre.

Courses at WesTEC run for twelve months and are delivered by TAFE Queensland South West.

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs).

Senior Secondary students have the opportunity to undertake School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs), allowing them to begin their chosen pathway while still completing their secondary education.

Students participating in a SAT typically spend one day per week in the workplace, completing nationally recognised training, while attending school for the remaining four days.

A formal training contract must be completed and registered with the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT). While the school supports and oversees the training contract, it is not an employment agency and does not source SAT placements for students.
